The lost-wax process
Wax, clay and metal come together in lost-wax casting. This overview explains the craft; it is not a record of the workshop or materials used for every item in our catalogue.
From model to metal
The sequence below is an educational outline, not a furnace-operation guide or a product-specific manufacturing specification.
Shape the wax model
The maker develops the form and surface details in wax. This model establishes the design that will be transferred to metal.
Prepare the clay mould
Clay surrounds the model to form a mould, with openings for the casting process. The mould is allowed to harden.
Remove the wax with heat
Heating melts out the wax, leaving space within the mould. This gives the technique its name: lost-wax casting.
Cast the metal
Molten metal enters the prepared mould and takes the place of the wax design. The casting is then allowed to cool.
Reveal and finish
The clay is removed to reveal the casting. Cleaning and finishing bring out its form and surface detail.
